Description and Rationale
I am Stephen Thorne, based in Johannesburg. Twenty five years in enterprise technology, most of it spent persuading other people’s data to behave itself, and these days I run AI and data science at group level. I am Group CTO for AI and Data Science at White Pearl Technology Group, a Nasdaq First North listed Swedish AI and data science group.
I registered because taxi-out time is the kind of problem I actually enjoy. It is bounded, it is measurable, and there is nowhere to hide ; the RMSE either comes down or it does not. No steering committee is going to rescue a bad model.
I am not an air traffic management specialist, which I am choosing to treat as an advantage rather than a confession. I come at it as a data person looking at a genuinely messy operational signal. Ground movement, weather, stand allocation, the queue at the holding point, and all of it out in the open where anyone can check the working.
The open science side matters to me as well. Public repo, published method, results other people can pull apart. Far too much of what I do sits behind an NDA. This does not, and that is refreshing.
And honestly, I want to know whether the instincts still hold up against a leaderboard.
